What Are Custom Military Patches?

Custom military patches are embroidered or printed insignia that carry the identity of a unit — its crest, its motto, its deployment, and the pride of the people who wear it. They range from the official patches worn on a uniform to the unofficial morale patches a shop designs for itself. On a uniform you'll find unit and command patches, MOS and skill tabs, and deployment patches; off the uniform, morale patches let a team show its personality with an inside joke, a mascot, or a hard-earned nickname.

Placement follows branch tradition. The Army wears the unit patch on the left shoulder and a combat patch (the unit a soldier deployed with) on the right. The Air Force identifies squadrons with distinctive patches, and the Navy uses rate and command insignia. Whatever the branch, the details matter, so our art team builds every design to your regulations and gets your approval before anything goes into production.

Most military patches are embroidered — either 75% embroidery, where the twill backing shows through as part of the design, or 100% embroidery for full thread coverage. When a crest has fine text or photo-like shading, a woven patch holds the detail better, and for tactical gear a rugged, weatherproof PVC patch is the go-to. Velcro (hook-and-loop) backing is by far the most popular choice because patches move between uniforms and gear, but sew-on and iron-on backings are also available.
