How Hat Pins Are Different from Lapel Pins

The biggest difference is the backing. A hat pin has to hold tight on soft, flexing fabric and survive being tossed in a bag, so the standard butterfly clutch isn't always enough. We recommend a rubber clutch (gentle on knit fabric) or a deluxe locking clutch (locks onto the post so it won't shake loose), and a magnetic backing is available when you don't want to pierce the hat at all. Wider designs are mounted on two posts so the pin sits flat and won't spin.

Hat pins also tend to run a little smaller than a jacket lapel pin — most land between 0.75" and 1.25" so they fit a cap panel without looking oversized. Bucket hats and beanies leave more room, so some customers size up there.
