The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 in the United States. It was named in honor of explorer Christopher Columbus. It is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization with 1.8 million members in 15,000 councils and nearly 200 councils on college campuses. Any “practical Catholic” man aged 18 years old or older is welcome to join.

Councils have been chartered all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Guatemala, Panama, Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Guam, Spain, Japan, Cuba, and even Poland. All of the Order’s ceremonies and business meetings are restricted to members. Other events are open to the public. Knight activities are secretive as well as civil and religious. They often involve charitable acts. In fact, in 2010, the Order gave over US$154 million directly to charity (over $1.406 billion in charitable contributions and 653 million man hours in the last 10 years) and performed over 70 million hours of voluntary service. Over 413,000 pints of blood were also donated by members.

The custom challenge coin featured here was made for members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Province that showed excellence in certain areas. Different chapters across the country order coins for awards and recognitions that pertain to their chapter. This challenge coin is unique because of the true to life photo that is offset printed on the back. When you see the coin up close, the image is an exact duplicate of the artwork that was submitted to us by the chapter. We protect this image with a thin coating of epoxy that is referred to as epoxy dome.

Texas and U.S. flags help distinguish the different locations where this particular challenge coin will be going. The front has the very recognizable Knights’ logo which is great for identification purposes. A bold emblem or photograph is enough to grab people’s attention and add a level of prestige to custom coins. Our high polished gold finish adds value and style to this coin and the smooth recessed gold areas help give the raised areas nice dimension. Details like these add value to the custom challenge coins by making them relevant and memorable.
