Our graphics team faces quite a few challenges when designing a customer’s challenge coins. Some of the biggest challenges come when the request is for the coin to be produced using a 3D mold. Although it appears to be an easy process, it is actually one that requires a lot of skill.
A 3D mold goes beyond the one raised level and one recessed level of the traditional coin. When a coin is produced using a 3D mold the image being portrayed literally jumps off the coin. A 3D mold adds to the depth of the detail possible. The roundness of a globe, the veins of a leaf or the contours of a building can all be felt when on a challenge coin with a 3D mold.
One of the most interesting 3D molds we have created was done for the United States National Support Element in Lisbon, Portugal. The idea they had for the coin consisted of geographic locations that they work near to or are important parts of the regions were they are located. They sent us an image that simply had a bunch of photographs’ pasted to it. Our graphics team was able to meticulously redraw each photo and position it onto the face of the coin design.
Once the customer approved the design it was our production departments skilled sculpturers that made the coin design come to life. Detailed and attractive, 3D images make challenge coins even more collectible. Individuals receiving this type of coin feel like they are receiving something really honorable.
