A challenge coin is a small, substantial medallion struck from solid metal and finished with your custom artwork — your unit insignia, department seal, company logo, or commemorative design. The tradition started in the U.S. military a century ago as a way to mark membership and shared service, and it has since spread to law enforcement, fire and EMS, government agencies, corporations, and private organizations of every kind.
A well-made custom challenge coin is something people keep. It travels in a pocket, sits on a desk, gets passed between colleagues, and eventually turns up decades later in a drawer with a story attached. That's why every custom coin we make is die-struck from iron or brass, plated by hand, and built to outlast the moment you gave it — with upgrades like 3D relief, spinners, bottle openers, and custom shapes for designs that need to stand out.
We're a full-service custom challenge coin maker — send us a logo, a sketch, a photo, or just a description, and our in-house designers draw your coin from scratch at no charge. Every order includes free artwork, free priority air shipping to the US, up to 7 enamel colors at no extra charge, and your choice of edge, plating, and packaging. Standard production runs 14-18 business days from art approval, with a 50-unit minimum — and with our USA Simulated Enamel option, you can have finished coins in as few as 3 business days.
Every custom challenge coin goes through the same precise manufacturing process — your artwork is cut into a steel die, struck into metal, hand-filled with enamel (if you choose color), baked, plated, and edged to spec.
Your logo or concept is drawn into print-ready artwork at no charge, then a custom steel die is cut to stamp your coin's shape, relief, and detail lines.
The die strikes an iron or brass blank under high pressure, creating raised metal borders and recessed color wells in a single hit — the same process used for official military challenge coins.
For colored coins, each recessed area is hand-filled with enamel — up to 7 colors free. For No Color coins, recessed areas are sandblasted for a matte contrast against polished metal.
Coins are baked to harden enamel, then plated in your chosen finish — gold, silver, copper, antique, or black nickel — and finished with your selected edge style.
Every coin is inspected by hand for color fidelity, plating consistency, and surface finish, then shipped free priority air to the US in your chosen packaging.
The biggest decision when you design custom challenge coins is how much color to add. Every coin starts die-struck — use the Color option above to see the upcharge for color on one side or both sides live at your selected size and quantity.

What are corporate challenge coins?
Answer
Corporate challenge coins are custom die-struck coins featuring your company logo, brand colors, and messaging. Originating from U.S. military tradition, they’ve been adopted by Fortune 500 companies and growing businesses alike as a premium tool for employee recognition, client gifts, trade show giveaways, and milestone celebrations. Unlike generic promotional items, a challenge coin is heavy, tactile, and built to last — recipients keep them for years.
What's the difference between corporate challenge coins and standard challenge coins?
Answer
Corporate challenge coins are standard challenge coins ordered by businesses for company-related purposes — recognition programs, events, client gifts, and brand promotion. The coin itself is manufactured the same way: die-struck metal with plating and optional enamel colors. The “corporate” distinction is about use case, not production. Any of our coin styles — no color, color on both sides, 3D, spinner — can be ordered as corporate challenge coins.
What is the minimum order for corporate challenge coins?
Answer
Our minimum order for corporate challenge coins is 50 units. Larger orders significantly reduce your per-unit cost — see our pricing page for volume discounts. Production typically takes 12–14 business days, and we include free priority air shipping to the US on every order.
What presentation and packaging options are available?
Answer
We offer several presentation options to elevate the unboxing experience: velvet pouches, leatherette presentation boxes, and acrylic display cases. Packaging is especially popular for executive gifts and top-performer recognition awards, where the presentation is part of the message. Ask about packaging options when requesting your free quote.
What are popular uses for corporate challenge coins?
Answer
The most common corporate uses are employee recognition programs (service anniversaries, performance awards, safety milestones), trade show giveaways, executive and client gifts, company anniversary celebrations, product launch commemorations, and onboarding gifts for new hires or key clients. Companies also order them for internal sales competitions, leadership development programs, and branded merchandise for partner events.
What are 3D challenge coins?
Answer
3D challenge coins are custom die-struck coins with deep sculptural relief that adds dimension and realism to the design. Unlike standard 2D coins where artwork is flat, 3D coins are carved with varying depths to create textures, faces, landscapes, and intricate detail that stands out dramatically under light. The result is a coin that looks as much like a piece of art as a commemorative item.
What's the difference between 3D coins and standard challenge coins?
Answer
The key difference is the depth of the artwork. Standard challenge coins are struck with two levels — raised metal and recessed background — creating a flat, graphic look. 3D challenge coins are sculpted with multiple levels of relief, adding depth, shadow, and dimension that makes portraits, animals, buildings, and detailed emblems look lifelike. 3D coins also require a separate 3D mold fee in addition to the standard coin mold fee.
What is the minimum order for 3D challenge coins?
Answer
The minimum order for custom 3D challenge coins is 50 units. Like all our challenge coins, larger orders lower your per-unit price — see our pricing page for volume discounts. Production typically takes 14-18 business days, and we include free priority air shipping to the US.
What materials and finishes are available for 3D challenge coins?
Answer
3D challenge coins are die-struck from iron, brass, or zinc alloy. Available platings include high polished gold, high polished silver, copper, black nickel, black metal, antique gold, antique silver, antique copper, and dual plating. Up to 7 colors can be added at no extra charge, and custom edge options include standard, rope, oblique, cross-cut diamond, bezel, and spur.
What are popular uses for 3D challenge coins?
Answer
3D challenge coins are popular wherever intricate, lifelike detail matters. Military units use them for unit emblems with realistic eagles, shields, and aircraft. Law enforcement agencies create 3D coins featuring detailed badge designs and portraits. Corporate organizations order them as awards and milestones with realistic logos and mascots. Fire departments, government agencies, and schools also use 3D coins when a standard 2D design can’t do justice to the artwork.
What is a coin spinner?
Answer
A coin spinner is a custom challenge coin with a built-in moving part that rotates on a pin axis. The spinner piece sits either inside a cutout in the coin (internal spinner) or on top of the coin face (floating spinner). When flicked, the element spins freely — making the coin interactive and far more engaging than a standard flat challenge coin.
How much do custom spinner coins cost?
Answer
Spinner coin pricing depends on size, quantity, and design complexity. Because spinner coins require two separate molds (one for the coin body and one for the spinner piece), there is a double-sided mold fee in addition to the per-unit price. Larger orders significantly reduce your per-unit cost. Fill out a free quote form for exact pricing on your design — there’s no obligation.
What is the difference between internal and floating spinners?
Answer
Internal spinners sit inside a cutout portion of the coin and rotate within the coin body. They work well for designs like propellers, globes, and logos that you want framed by the surrounding artwork.
Floating spinners sit on top of the coin face and rotate like the hands of a clock. They become the centerpiece of the design and work well for swords, compasses, and fan blade shapes.
Both styles use a pin axis for smooth, long-lasting rotation.
Why do spinner coins require two molds?
Answer
Every spinner coin is made from two separate metal pieces — the coin body and the spinner element — that are manufactured independently and then assembled. Each piece needs its own custom die (mold) to stamp the artwork. This is why spinner coins have a double-sided mold fee, but it also means both the coin and the spinner can have their own detailed artwork and plating.
What is the minimum order for spinner coins?
Answer
Our minimum order for custom spinner coins is 50 units. Larger orders lower your per-unit price — check our pricing page for volume discounts. Production typically takes 14-18 business days, and we include free priority air shipping to the US.
