The United Nations, commonly referred to as the UN, is an international organization committed to maintaining international peace and security. It was founded by 51 countries in 1945 after the Second World War. Since then, it has grown to a 192 member organization that develops friendly relations among nations, promotes social progress, better living standards and human rights by taking action on a wide range of issues. Its presence has impacted the lives of a countless number of individuals and nations, including Haiti.
After the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti a little over a year ago, the UN put teams of workers in place to help the country recover. We recently had the honor of creating a custom challenge coin that commemorates the relief and stabilization mission that is still underway in the country. This coin was presented to those who are going above and beyond the call of duty to repair and restore the livelihood in Haiti. With an event this meaningful, it was important that the double sided challenge coin possess many symbolic features.
A Symbol of Restoration
Looking at the first side and starting at its outer edge, you see that the flags of all the countries involved in the relief effort form a border around of the challenge coin. The words “United Nations Stabilization Mission Haiti” can be read along the inner circle. A gold image of the island sits on a marine blue background with the Haitian and Dominican Republic flags displayed out front.
The opposite side of the coin has a couple of distinct differences that make the challenge coin design not only complete, but sentimental and unique as well. The multinational flag border remains on the outer edge. This time the inner circle displays the words, “For Dedicated Service to the People of Haiti”. The UN’s official emblem is centered and displayed in gold and white.
Making a Difference, One Coin at a Time
We feel privileged to be a part of the UN’s Haiti Stabilization Mission by creating this commemorative custom award coin. As a premier challenge coin maker, we recognize that our distance from a natural disaster does not have to limit our involvement. We appreciate and respect the time and energy that the United Nations as well as the many individuals working to rebuild Haiti are putting in. Being able to design and produce this coin was truly an honor.
