Recently, we were challenged by one of our customers to recreate the appearance of a chess piece. The piece in question had a lot of shadows and gradients which gave it a 3D look. We recommended going with an offset printed pin because we could give the 2D pin a 3D appearance. To finish the pin off, we added a clear epoxy coating to help protect the printed image.
Offset printing is an option that we offer customers when they want an exact match of an image or photograph. The process allows your design to be printed on the lapel pin surface with one or more color gradients, or fades. This process also allows us to have two or more colors touch each other without having to divide the colors with metal like our traditional die struck lapel pins. Once the design is printed, an epoxy dome is put over the top of the design as a way to protect it from damage.
In the case of the customer referenced in this blog, we wanted to capture the regality of the King piece that they sent us to use in their lapel pin’s design. In chess, it is the most important piece. The object of the game is to trap the opponent’s king so that its capture is unavoidable. This move is called checkmate.
Chess pieces in general are multi-dimensional. Using offset printing allowed us to capture the detail of the King piece. Rather than look flat and two-dimensional, we created it in a way that shows all of its angles and the lustrous finish of the piece. This 3D design helped capture the essence of the church’s chosen symbol and made a stylish lapel pin for the fellowship campaign.
