UNICEF, known best for its humanitarian work, has a global presence that stretches the span of every continent. One of its most successful programs involves educating children about the physical and health benefits of good personal hygiene. The workshops are a critical part of a student’s growth and development in countries with high mortality rates. Diseases like Malaria, HIV and AIDS as well as malnutrition run rampant in countries with limited supplies of clean drinking water. UNICEF is aware of this predicament and serves as a liaison in these communities.
Recently, we were contacted by the organization because they wanted to create custom lapel pins with a powerful message to hand out to schoolchildren worldwide. These small souvenirs serve as a reminder of the training that the students received so that they can continue to care for themselves in a safe and sterile way.
A sixty year commitment to preventing child mortality has given UNICEF its rock solid reputation. The lapel pins created for this program pay testament to the group’s vow to “break the cycle of poverty that keeps children on the brink of survival.”
Incorporating Universal Symbols Into Lapel Pin Designs Lapel Pins Plus worked closely with UNICEF to create a lapel pin design that students and teachers from all countries could relate to and understand. Rather than complicate things by incorporating different languages on the surface of the pins, we communicated the message of good hygiene by coming up with a series of universal symbols.
The first is a tap with running water. The second is an outhouse or restroom facility. The third is a pair of hands with soap bubbles. The underlying theme of the pins is that you should wash your hands with soap and water after using the restroom. This type of message, although primitive in nature, makes a monumental impact on the lives of the individuals that come into contact with it.
Schoolchildren can display the pins on a shirt, jacket, hat or backpack. They can also pass on the lessons that they learned from the UNICEF program to younger siblings, parents, and neighbors. Rather than be the type of message that speaks to the individual, the custom lapel pins that we created for this program have the ability to educate people globally.
